Thimgan barely misses nationals

The number 13 lived up to its unlucky reputation for NIU gymnast Vicki Thimgan.

As (un)luck would have it, Thimgan found out Monday that she missed qualifying for the NCAA National Gymnastic Tournament by one-tenth of a point.

Thimgan was in the running to be an individual competitor at the NCAA Nationals held April 19-20 at the University of Alabama.

The NIU gymnast placed 11th in the all-around competition at the NCAA Central Regional Championships which made her a solid candidate for the national meet. To qualify, the sophomore standout needed to place in the nation’s Top-12 of the all-arounders.

Thimgan could still make a trip to nationals but only in the unlikely event that one of the qualifiers would choose to drop out.

“Injuries happen all the time in gymnastics,” Thimgan said. “But it is not likely someone will just decide not to go. It is a real honor to be invited so I’m sure everyone who qualified will be there.”

According to Thimgan, the gymnasts have until 5 p.m., April 16 to withdraw from the meet. Until then, Thimgan must continue training.

“I don’t really want to continue training,” Thimgan said. “But there is still that chance, so just in case someone withdraws I have to keep practicing.”
