NIU students and local artists alike came together to curate an art show in honor of the 117th Homecoming for the Huskies.
Jubilee, a home for locally-curated artisans at 128 E. Lincoln Highway, debuted their art show “Huskie Homage” on Tuesday. The show was then highlighted in Thursday’s Homecoming Block Party.
“One of our artists is doing a live art performance today (Thursday) during the block party, Marty Gniech, and he will be basically out there with all of the stuff that’s going on painting live,” said Christy Andrews, Jubilee owner and curator.
In collaboration with NIU, Jubilee called for NIU affiliates and DeKalb community members to submit 2D and 3D art in tribute to the Huskies’ past, present and future. The art was then displayed in the store alongside Jubilee’s other handmade goods.
“There are a couple of students’ work in there. It’s also local artists that are represented in the art show as well,” Andrews said.
The art features mostly Huskie imagery, including photos of Victor E. Huskie, realistic huskies and the NIU Huskie logo. The only outlier to this theme was a gel plate rendition of a football coach. Mediums included oil paint, acrylic paint, crochet and stickers.
“I came up with the Huskie Homage just to pay tribute to all the Huskies,” Andrews said.
Jubilee’s other art ventures include classes, rentable space for art and one-of-a-kind handmade goods. For more information about their upcoming art and activities, check out their website.
