Every college town needs lots of cheap places to eat with your friends and family. Here in DeKalb, we currently have McDonald’s, Culvers, Pizza Hut, Burger King and D.P. Dough among others. But the Northern Star Editorial Board has some suggestions for what fast food chains should come next.
Recently, Wingstop finally opened their doors, and wings, to the DeKalb area, located in Sycamore.
But DeKalb needs to bring more fast food chains such as In-N-Out, Shake Shack, Chick-fil-A, Mac’s Restaurant, Cinnabon and many other good places to eat or hang out with friends and family at.
Additionally, because college students are often up late, DeKalb needs places open past midnight. As of right now, D.P. Dough, which closes at 4 a.m., is one of the only restaurants open past midnight.
Fast food chains are popular among NIU students, and they have thoughts about what chains DeKalb needs next as well. Gustavo Navarro, a sophomore business administration major, shared his opinion.
“Me and my roommate really wanted some White Castle, and we were looking up ones, and the closest one was like 20 miles away. And neither one of us have cars, so it was like we couldn’t even, you know, so that’s like, one I would definitely like to see is White Castle,” Navarro said.
The closest White Castle restaurant is in Aurora and is a 35-40 minute drive away. They serve sliders, as well as breakfast food, dessert and drinks.
The Northern Star Editorial Board decided to poll our Huskies about this highly pressing issue: which fast food chains should come next to DeKalb?
On the poll, we picked four fast food chains that DeKalb needs: In-N-Out, Chick-fil-A, Shake Shack and Krispy Kreme.
Out of 277 Huskies who voted, 160 people want to bring Chick-fil-A, 57 people want to bring In-N-Out, 33 people want to bring Shake Shack and 27 people want to bring Krispy Kreme.
Others advocated for bringing restaurants such as Waffle House and Olive Garden, among others. Other responses said that they don’t want to bring any fast food chains, but they want to support the local businesses.
Evan Hume, a first-year undecided student, is passionate about bringing Chick-fil-A to DeKalb.
“I have about three (thousand) or 4000 points saved up from going to Chick-fil-A previously, prior to coming here. So it’d be really great to use those points, especially as a broke college student,” Hume said. “I am from Colorado, actually, but DeKalb seems like the one spot in the entire United States that doesn’t have a Chick fil A.”
While there are many small towns without Chick-Fil-A, it can certainly feel like DeKalb is the only one to students desiring waffle fries.
The Northern Star Editorial Board encourages such popular chains to make their way to Barb City. The Huskies here have some cravings to satisfy.
