Breaking the record for most Mid-American Conference weekly honors for NIU women’s tennis, freshman Lucia Yecora has been named the MAC Singles Player of the Week for the second time this season.
In the Huskies’ win against the University of Toledo on Friday, Yecora took a three-set win at No. 3 singles en route to NIU’s 4-3 victory. After taking a 6-4 first set against sophomore Gaby Rondon, Yecora dropped a 1-6 second set to level the score. Yecora swept the deciding set, going 6-0 for the win.
Yecora improved to 5-0 in MAC singles play against Ball State University sophomore Isabel Tanjuatco on Sunday, dominating 6-3, 6-0 sets.
With five matches left in the regular season, Yecora holds a 14-1 record in singles play and is undefeated in conference.
This is the seventh weekly honor for the Huskies, the most since NIU women’s tennis earned six weekly honors in 2017. Yecora and freshman Irmak Budak have each earned the honor twice, while senior Maria Dzemeshkevich and junior Nataly Ninova have each earned it once. Junior Jenna Horne and senior Reagan Welch were named the MAC Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 17.
The Huskies (18-4, 4-1 MAC) take on Bowling Green State University at noon Friday in Bowling Green, Ohio.
