It takes courage and strength for students to walk upon a stage and perform a talent in front of people, but hearing the applause is worth every practice.
At 7 p.m. Thursday in the Holmes Student Center’s Huskie Den, the first annual Student Showcase Talent Show took the stage.
There were eight performances in total with seven of them musical. The performances included steel drums, freestyle rap, two K Pop dance groups, two acapella singing groups, a keyboard display and a juggling act. Every act was met with applause and cheers from the audience.
Student Affairs was responsible for showcasing the event with Olivia King and Makaylynn Newman as the Holmes Student Center social media marketing team to spread the word to students over campus. Ajani Griffin was the MC who provided commentary and hyped up the audience for the next talent.
Tiajuana Hernandez started the talent show with a steel drum routine which acted as vocals to the two instrumental tracks playing in the background. While she played, she had rhythm flowing through her as she danced.
Another standout showcase was the K-Pop dance group “Imagen,” consisting of 12 passionate dancers from the idol club organization with four of them on stage. They danced with fast, practiced movements and appeared to be having fun doing what they love.
One of the members, Andrea Weiand, a junior majoring in business administration and Spanish, expressed her gratitude for being able to dance.
“We are a group of people singing and having fun and getting skilled in dance,” Weiand said. “I made a lot of friends with the club.”
Jonathan Mathew, a senior majoring in statistics and applied mathematics, had different opinions when it came to which performance he liked.
“I liked the Huskie Hunks and the C3lestial Covers.” Mathew said. “I would sing in the next talent show.”
The Huskie Hunks are an all-male acapella group of musicians and bands who perform songs by “NSYNC,” “The Altogether,” “CeeLo Green” and other similar artists. The group will have their next performance at 8 p.m. April 24 in the Music Building.
The C3lestial Covers are another K-Pop dance cover group who did a three-act performance during the talent show.
Jeremiah Visor, a junior majoring in psychology, enjoyed the talent show more than he thought he would.
“It was actually pretty cool because the host is one of my classmates,” Visor said. “I really liked the juggling act.”
After the show, students were encouraged to scan QR codes prompting them for feedback on what they saw. If all goes well, another talent show could come soon.
