At NIU, classes run Monday through Friday. Many students believe that classes should only be held Monday through Thursday, as many social gatherings occur on Thursday nights. In addition to this, students have expressed that class attendance is minimal on Fridays, leading to fewer students learning in their classes. This leads to the question: Should NIU host classes on Friday?
Yes, there should be Friday classes.
At the end of the day, individuals attend college to get an education. Fridays are another day to learn and offer more time options for classes. If a student plans on going out on a Thursday night, they should plan their schedules to ensure they can make it to class the next morning. Either that, or do not go out at all if you do not think you will make it to class the next day.
No, there should not be Friday classes.
While college is about getting an education, it is also a once-in-a-lifetime experience where you will create bonds with a variety of people. The social events that happen on Thursday nights are a great way to meet new people and foster social networks. With that said, students should be able to recover from a late night out, rather than go to a class that could have been on an earlier weekday.
This extra day also gives students more time to work on assignments or de-stress. For those that go home on the weekends, not having Friday classes allows them to start their commute earlier.
There should be Friday classes, but only later in the day.
Part of being a college student is learning time management. While going out and having fun is important, so is getting a proper education. In order to get the best of both worlds, having Friday classes should be an option, but only after 1 p.m. This allows students to rest after a night out while also still getting the education they paid for.
