Chippewas ice wrestling team

“I feel like yelling and screaming, but that won’t do any good,” NIU wrestling coach Ed Vatch said after his squad’s 30-11 loss to Central Michigan on Sunday.

Frustration seems to be setting in on the fourth-year coach who is suffering through his worst season (3-11) since 1987-88 when his team was 5-14-1.

“It’s frustrating to have wrestled good two nights ago (a 28-17 win over Marquette) and then wrestle like they did today,” Vatch said.

The Huskies managed only three wins and a draw against the Chippewas (3-4). At 150 pounds, Jim Herdman won a 10-8 decision over Brian Jones (CMU) after being down 6-3. Jim Kossakowski increased his record to 9-4 with a 6-3 win against Mike Galvin (CMU). In the final match, heavyweight Mark Kuehl earned a 10-3 win over Bob Yeager (CMU) and upped his record to 17-8.

Gene Marino started the meet with a 5-5 draw against Dan Chrovian (CMU) in the 118-pound class. At 126, Brad Smith cruised past John Willems (NIU) 17-3. Scott Frego dropped to 1-9 after a 11-2 loss to CMU’s Jamie McCloughan at the 134-pound level.

The expected return of Bill Jepsen (190) to the lineup did not occur because of soreness in his knee and a shoulder injury received in practice last week.

“I talked to Ed (Vatch) and he told me to sit out a couple more weeks,” Jepsen said.

Without Jepsen, the Huskies were again forced to move the second half of the lineup up a weight. At 158, T.C. Dantzler lost 13-3 to CMU’s Greg Hoffman. Kevin Vogel (CMU) earned the meet’s only pin over Jon Popp at 1:47 of the first period. Joe Madonia (NIU) was pulled from his match by Vatch because of a rib injury in the second period giving 190-pounder Gary Hoffman a win by default.
