City to hire extra police officer

DeKalb will get an extra police officer to participate in multi-jurisdictional drug enforcement task force.

The city council voted Monday to allocate about $43,500 per year for an additional police officer and vehicle to work with 4 to 5 officers from DeKalb County, the University Police and the State Police.

Each of the three local jurisdictions would allocate one officer and a vehicle to the task force.

Police Chief Joe Maciejewski said Illinois would provide a supervisor, clerical help, cash funding for undercover drug buys and specialized training for the unit.

“It’s important and beneficial,” said 2nd Ward Alderman Michael Welsh. “We can combine our resources with other agencies and save taxpayers money. It’s also an area that needs attention.”

The council voted unanimously for the proposal.
