Flames swept by gymnasts

It was a clean sweep for the NIU women’s gymnastics team Tuesday night against Illinois-Chicago as the Huskies won every event on their way to a 178.50-170.15 victory.

NIU improved to 12-5 in duals this season while the Flames fell to 2-9.

“Again, this was a group effort all the way around,” NIU coach Bobbie Cesarek said. “You don’t score 178 points with only one or two people.”

Huskie gymnasts dotted the top three in each event, with sophomore Martha Unger winning or sharing the title of each event.

Unger used those scores to take the all-around crown with her 36.70 total. Senior Gretchen Kind tied Unger’s top score of 9.00 on vault while freshman Bethann Holleran was tied for third at 8.95.

Sophomore Julie Wimmers equalled Unger’s best of 9.10 on uneven parallel bars. Karen Dunphy rounded out an NIU top three on uneven bars with her 8.95 score. Freshman Tina Agostino placed second on beam behind Unger with a 9.05.

“Tina threw a nice beam set tonight,” Cesarek said. “It was also nice to see Julie back to her old form on uneven parallel bars.”

NIU returns to a familiar floor for its final home meet when it hosts Wisconsin in a 2 p.m. dual Saturday at Chick Evans Field House.
