DeKALB — The women’s tennis team was unable to get its first win in conference play Saturday as it suffered a loss to the University of Akron.

“This was a tough loss for the team,” said Head Coach Tanya Mahefu, according to NIU Media Services. “The score doesn’t reflect how close the matches were.”

Freshman Thisuri Molligoda and senior Evelyn Youel didn’t finish their match against Rita Pedroso and Anna Ulijanov at the No. 1.

The second match of doubles was between freshmen Maria Potsi and Lara Slisco going up against Carli Knezevich and Miruna Vasilescu. It was a close match, but the Huskies fell 6-4 for their first doubles loss of the match.

The doubles point was decided with the match between senior Abigail Dekkinga and sophomore Brodie Walker as they took on Luisa Echeverry and Waverly Wituski. Akron also took that match and won the doubles point.

“We let the doubles point get away from us,” Mahefu said. “I felt that we should’ve won the doubles point, and [we] would’ve had momentum going into singles.”

The Huskies were only able to get one win in singles competition.

Molligoda started the match off against Vasilescu in match No. 1 and dropped the match 6-2, 6-4.

Potsi got the lone single win for the Huskies in a match against Pedroso at the No. 2. The match went into an extra set, resulting in Potsi taking the 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 win.

Dekkinga went up against Knezevich in match No. 3 and only scored two points, losinf 6-2, 6-0.

Walker’s seven-match singles win streak ended in match No. 4, losing 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Youel went up against Echeverry in match No. 5. She was able to push the second set into advantage but couldn’t get the win and lost 6-1, 7-5.

Slisko fell 6-4, 6-3 in a close match against Flores at No. 6.

The Huskies will be back on the court at 12 p.m. Sunday against Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
