DeKALB — The softball team had hot bats Tuesday, lighting up the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames for nine runs in the first inning en route to a slaughter rule victory.

The Huskies earned their 10th win on the season, scored 13 runs and won the season series against the Flames. The team scored in every inning Tuesday.

“When you score nine runs in the first inning, it sets you up for the whole game,” said Head Coach Christina Sutcliffe. “It really helped us play a little more relaxed.”

In the first inning, the Huskies allowed one run off a base hit. The Flames had two hits, one error and left one on base.

The Huskies caught fire offensively in the first inning, loading the bases twice. The Huskies scored nine runs from four hits.

The Flames were forced to change pitchers in the first inning after Jennah Speth allowed nine earned runs from three hits.

Junior outfielder Jenny Van Geertry scored two runs, while seven other Huskies scored one run in the first inning.

“I feel relaxed, and I know my teammates always have my back even when I don’t get on base,” Van Geertry said.

The Huskies had nine runs, four hits and left two runners on base to close out the first inning.

The Flames managed to score one run in the second inning.

The Huskies didn’t stop scoring in the second inning. Senior infielder Bekah Harnish scored on an error, and Van Geertry drove in sophomore infielder Anne Allen with her fourth triple of the season.

The Huskies led 11-2 after the second inning.

In the third inning, the Huskies tacked on another run from two hits.

The Flames couldn’t stop the Huskies in the fourth inning. Senior Alaynie Woollard earned her fourth walk of the day. NIU earned three hits and scored a run. The Huskies defense was strong in the contest, only allowing two runs on six hits and one error.

The game only lasted five innings as the Huskies were up by 11 runs after five.

Allen had a big game, going three for three with two runs and two RBIs.

“I was just seeing the ball big today,” Allen said. “I’m just looking for a good pitch early in the count.”

Freshman pitcher Mackenzie Bryan earned her second win on the season. Bryan went two innings and only allowed three hits.

The Huskies will be back in action to face the University of Buffalo Bulls 3 p.m Friday at Mary M. Bell Field in DeKalb.
