City council to hear FY18 budget proposal

The city council will conduct a public hearing to review the proposed budget for the Fiscal Year 2018 during a Monday meeting.

The budget projects $92,861,707 in total revenues and $95,026,927 in total expenditures, according to the FY2018 Proposed Budget.

The majority of financial resources for DeKalb come from sales and use taxes, as well as fines and fees, according to the proposal.

Rising crime in DeKalb still needs to be addressed, and the proposed budget intends to work toward resolving the issue. Within the past five years, there has been a 17.2 percent increase in calls for police service, according to the proposal.

This increase in calls for service is projected to continue in 2018 with more than 50,000 calls. The FY2018 Proposed Budget allows for an increase to the DeKalb Police Department’s staff from 65 to 72 sworn-in officers to address this surge in requested services.

Annie Glidden North Revitalization

Aside from the budget, alderpersons will also be presented with an update proposed by the Annie Glidden North Revitalization Plan Task Force, which was established to help with the planning process for the initiative. This revitalization effort aims to improve the quality of life for DeKalb residents residing in the North Annie Glidden quadrant.

As the revitalization plan moves forward, a third community meeting can be expected in late January or early February, according to the project’s timeline.

Parking restrictions

Parking laws are expected to change pending the council’s approval. The proposed parking restrictions are anticipated to assist in the effort to control crime.

“We know that certain parking regulations can help benefit our ability to control crime,” Lowery said during a Nov. 13 Committee of the Whole meeting.

In the areas of Russell Road and Crane Drive, on-street parking will be prohibited between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., and the north side of Crane Drive will be a no-parking zone. Additionally, no-parking zones from 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. will be enacted on the west and east sides of Annie Glidden Road.
