DeKalb | The NIU Mock Trial team defeated Brown University and the University of Kansas but was bested by Emory University and Yale University at the National Championship Tournament held from April 21 to April 23 in Los Angeles.

The intercollegiate mock trial tournament, hosted by UCLA, is one of the American Mock Trial Association’s contests. Only the top 48 of the nation’s over 600 teams is invited to the National Championship Tournament; this was the second consecutive year NIU was invited.

The Huskies defeated Brown University and the University of Kansas each by a score of 2-1 but was swept by both Yale and Emory. Yale and Emory eventually placed, and Brown received an honorable mention in the tournament.

NIU was recognized by its peers with the Spirit of AMTA Award, an award given to the team that best exemplifies the values of justice, civility and fair play, according to a press release.

The mock trial team is already accepting students for the fall semester. Contact Coach Mitch Pickerill at [email protected].
