Baseball sets season highs over weekend against Buffalo

By Christopher Loggins

Baseball went 2-1 over the weekend, defeating the University at Buffalo in a three-game series to move to 14-25 on the season and 9-6 in the MAC.

The Huskies got the weekend off to a bad start Friday, losing 7-2 after the Bears took over the game late. The loss pushed NIU’s winless streak up to three games — one it hadn’t seen since the beginning of the month.

NIU shot back with a dominating win Saturday, heating up on offense and taking a 9-2 win. It was led by senior outfield Stephen Letz, who only went 1-4 but drove in four runs on a third inning grand slam. NIU outhit Buffalo 10-8 in the game.

The Huskies capped the weekend off with a blowout win, cruising to a 17-7 victory. They tallied 19 hits, their most in a game this season, scoring at least three runs in three innings. Buffalo scored all seven of its runs in the last two innings, but its comeback attempt fell short.

“That was a great series win and a great bounce back outing for Donovin [Sims] today,” said NIU head coach Mike Kunigonis, according to an NIU Athletics news release. “We did a great job offensively and we definitely separated several times throughout the game. We need to finish better than we did today and we have some work to do overall but this was a tremendous series win.

We need to get back at it on Tuesday and continue to play well versus a good [University of Illinois at Chicago] team and keep momentum going into our next series at Bowling Green [State University].”

NIU will return for midweek action as it takes on UIC at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday at Ralph McKinzie Field.
