Former student’s death ruled a suicide

Former NIU student Hasan Gill’s cause of death has been confirmed a suicide, said Joe King, director of Media and Public Relations.

Hasan Gill was a 25-year-old former NIU student whose burned body was found on the morning of Dec. 29 near a path behind the WNIJ-WNIU Broadcast Studios, 801 N. First St., King said.

The autopsy was completed this past week and toxicology reports all came back negative, King said.

“Our police department worked hand in glove with the coroner’s office in this,” King said. “All the findings pointed in one direction, the deceased left behind a note that indicated what he was going to do, there was eyewitness evidence of him purchasing gasoline and a gas can shortly before that, and there was no evidence of struggle at the scene and only one set of footprints.”

The final ruling was a result of the investigation done by NIU Police and the result of the autopsy and the follow-up the coroner did, King said.

“It was one of those sad and tragic things and our heart goes out to the Gill family,” King said.
