Baker: Student death must lead to violence prevention

The death of NIU student Quintonio LeGrier “speaks to the need to mobilize communities around solutions that will make a difference,” said NIU President Doug Baker in a campus update Tuesday.

LeGrier, 19, died from multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner. LeGrier was killed after “an incident with Chicago police” on Dec. 26, according to the campus update.

“Meanwhile, let us commit to finding ways to prevent tragedies related to violence—and to promoting peace and understanding in our communities,” Baker said in the campus update. “By coming together as a caring community, I’m confident we can move forward together.”
