Board of Trustees talks change to conflict policy

The Board of Trustees Governance Ad Hoc Committee discussed employee salaries and possible language changes to the conflict of interest policy at a Wednesday meeting.

The committee members spent time discussing the hiring process of administrators and faculty after Marc Staruss, Board of Trustees chair, had brought up concerns voiced in a previous Board of Trustees meeting. Provost Lisa Freeman said there are 60 employees who receive a salary of $150,000 a year, 12 of which report directly to the president, while others report to deans, the provost or the athletic director.

The university’s policy on conflict of interest was on the agenda and General Counsel Jerry Blakemore said it hadn’t been brought up in about three years. Trustee John Butler said he wanted to change the term “conflict of interest,” to “disclosure of interest policy,” because of its negative connotation.
