SA Senate candidates prepare for elections

Around 100 people showed up to Tuesday and Wednesday’s mandatory Student Association Senate candidate meetings in anticipation for the Sept. 29 and 30 election.

“The meetings are for candidates who want to run in the Student Association Senate elections,” SA Senate Speaker Dillon Domke said. “Basically they cover all the guidelines and policies that pertain to the actual elections.”

Some of these guidelines include, but are not limited to being a fee-paying student with a grade point average of at least 2.5 for undergraduate students, 3.0 for graduate students and 2.2 for law students and receiving 50 signatures on their petition, according to the candidate registration form.

The first meeting saw around 30 to 40 people while the second meeting had 60 to 70, said SA Election Commissioner Kevin Gordon.

“The next thing they have to do is finish their packets [and] gather all the information that the SA needs to check their qualifications,” Gordon said. “Then they can begin campaigning soon after.”

The official candidates list will be posted at 9 a.m. Wednesday outside the SA Office in Campus Life Building, Room 180 and on Huskie Link, the social media website where the elections will be hosted.

The elections are close to a month-long process concluding on Sept. 29 and 30, when students will have the opportunity to vote from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and results will be posted on Oct. 1. The elections will result in up to 40 senators.

“I feel like it’s going to be a great election this year,” Gordon said. “Both candidate meetings had a great turnout, and I think it is going to be a very fun and interesting election. Hopefully it is competitive, but also respectful as well. I look forward to it.”
