Football awaits season

Football will open up the season against UNLV 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Huskie Stadium.

The team is coming off a season where they finished 11-3 and made an appearance in the Boca Raton Bowl. The Rebels finished the 2014-15 season with a 2-11 record and are on a six-game losing streak.

The Huskies won against UNLV last year in a close matchup 48-34. Highlighted in that game were six catches and 138 yards from wide receiver Da’Ron Brown and rushes for two touchdowns from running back Cameron Stingily.

With the departure of Brown to the NFL, Tommylee Lewis, redshirt senior wide receiver, stands as number one on the depth chart. Lewis missed 12 games last season due to injury.

Lewis was a key player for the Huskies offense before he got hurt. He was involved in the rushing attack, passing game and threw his first touchdown in 2013.

“We plan to use Lewis the same way,” said head coach Rod Carey. “He missed all of last season so he’s 100 percent and he’s ready to go.”

Though much is expected of Lewis heading into the year, there are a plethora of offensive players who may be used.

“We have a lot of weapons,” Lewis said. “A lot of guys can do many different things and can bring a lot of things to the offense, including myself.”

Taking the season one game at a time will continue to be the plan, Carey said.

“I expect that we focus on UNLV and give everything we got for this first game,” Carey said.
