1965 football jerseys return

By Christopher Loggins

When football launches its season on Sept. 5 against UNLV, it will pay homage to the 1965 undefeated Huskie team for the 50th anniversary of Huskie Stadium.

The Huskies plan on doing so by wearing throwback jerseys that highly resemble those worn by the team, with a new school twist that gives the jerseys a modern-day look.

The jerseys begin with a black helmet topped off with red and white stripes and players’ numbers on the side. The letters “NIU” will be at the forefront of the helmet. The Adidas throwbacks will feature a red jersey with white numbers, placed beneath patches of a MAC logo and the 50th anniversary of Huskie Stadium.

Planted on the sleeve of the jerseys are the letters “NI,” and the inside collar of the jersey will include “NIU vs. UNLV September 5. 2015.” The uniforms will be finished off with red and white striped socks that have high similarity to those worn by the undefeated 1965 squad.

The uniforms are set to be auctioned off through the Huskies Athletics site, with proceeds going to all athletics teams at NIU, according the NIU Alumni Association. Members of the 1965 team will return to Huskie Stadium for opening kickoff. They are also part of the team that played the first ever game at the stadium.

In a final ode to the undefeated season, NIU will be offering single game tickets at the price of $19.65, and they can be purchased online using the promo code “1965.”
