NIU baseball: Huskies earn series victory over Tennessee Tech

By Northern Star staff

Baseball used an historic performance in the rubber match Sunday to win the three-game weekend series against the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles.

The Huskies (5-5) pounded out 20 hits as they scored 18 runs in an 18-3 victory over the Golden Eagles (5-4) in Cookeville, Tenn. It was the Huskies’ most hits since 2009 and most runs scored since 2010.

Freshman Brad Wood recorded three hits, including a grand slam, and drove in six RBIs. Freshman Malique Ziegler also hammered out three hits, including a two-run home run, and registered four RBIs.

The Huskies won the series opener Friday, 4-2, as the pitching staff combined to throw a one-hitter. They then dropped the second game, 14-2, Saturday before responding with the 18-3 win in the rubber match Sunday.

The 5-5 start to the season matches the Huskies’ best 10-game start since they went 5-5 to open 2007.

The Huskies play in Illinois for the first time this season when they travel to Carbondale for a three-game series against the Southern Illinois Salukis. First pitches are scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
