Thanksgiving break weather, travel

Weather

The temperature will remain below freezing today as students leave for Thanksgiving break.

NIU meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste said Monday’s snow storm, which produced about 1 inch of snow, may combine with strong winds and a high of 29 degrees to create slippery conditions if the roads are not treated.

“People will need to drive carefully if they’re going home,” Sebenste said. “However, most of the main roads and the side streets at that point should be reasonably good to go.”

DeKalb may see snow flurries Wednesday if snow-producing clouds do not stay south of the area, Sebenste said.

For students remaining in DeKalb, there will be normal Huskie Line service until Wednesday.

Chicago travel

For students traveling to or near Chicago today, the Elburn Shuttle will leave from the Holmes Student Center at 3:25 p.m. and 5:20 p.m.

The shuttle is scheduled to arrive at the Elburn Metra Platform at 4:15 p.m. and 6 p.m.

An alternative mode of travel for students is Carpool Connections on NIU’s website at bit.ly/1vFXKAJ. Carpool Connections is a database that connects students, faculty and staff who commute to and from the same area, allowing them to carpool.

Other

Those traveling to the East Coast should prepare for “travel headaches,” Sebenste said.

“Travel for Thanksgiving, albeit cold, should be dry for us,” Sebenste said. “But those people who are heading for the East Coast should realize there could be a major winter storm … affecting areas like Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, maybe Boston with heavy snow or rain. You’ll be OK Tuesday night, but get there as soon as you can because Wednesday is going to be very interesting.”
