City helps spread info on new Ill. law

City Council is taking the initiative to ensure gunholders are aware that, yes, they may now carry concealed firearms, but not on various properties, including NIU, parks, hospitals, bars and municipal buildings.

Let’s be realistic: Why in the world would anyone want to carry firearms while they are at a park? Parks are supposed to be around for children to have fun and swing on the monkey bars, and they’re not supposed to be a place of violence.

Also, I pray that any person who plans on carrying guns has no plans on taking his or her firearm to a bar, a place where you and I both know you may get intoxicated and not be in the right state of mind to have access to a gun.

So, way to go, City Council. I can’t wait to see the signs that will indicate that a specific location is a firearm-free zone.

Faculty should use first days to teach, not review syllabi

We students a real adults, so I like to think we have a pretty good idea of what we should and shouldn’t do in class.

I am paying good money to learn every day, hour, minute and second of class.

I am not paying money for an instructor to mindlessly read four pages of the do’s and don’ts that are now etched in my brain: Texting in class is a no-no and I know plagiarism will get students kicked out of a course and will be on their records.

So, please, NIU, let’s really stick to the whole “learn today, lead tomorrow” deal and get rid of syllabus week, because I really do want to learn today and eventually lead tomorrow.
