Seniors can’t stop winning

By Brian Earle

In each of the last three seasons, football’s senior class has set a new mark as the most winningest class in the history of NIU. This season has been no different as this senior class set a new record with 46 wins.

The previous record was set last season by the 2012 class with 41 wins.

As special as the 2012 class was for NIU, the 2013 class has been a part of remarkable feats. With 46 wins in the last fours seasons, the Huskies are tied with the likes of Alabama and Oregon for the most wins during that span. On top of that, they have gone to the MAC Championship each season.

The seniors have also accumulated

nation-leading streaks, such as 25 straight conference wins, 15 straight victories on the road and 26 straight wins at Huskie Stadium.

With its 35-14 victory over Western Michigan on Nov. 26, the senior class went out the right way by posting a record of 23-0 at Huskie Stadium and never losing a game. The win completed the Huskies’ first undefeated regular season, 12-0, as an FBS program.

“It was an emotional day,” said redshirt senior quarterback Jordan Lynch. “We had to try to control our emotions. I think we did a good job of that, and it’s just all the good memories and going undefeated at Huskie Stadium in all my years here; it was awesome. I feel like we sent our seniors out the right way with that win and going undefeated in the regular season.”

As important as the prior NIU classes have been to this point, this class has been the one to put NIU on the map. The Huskies have been led to this point by Lynch, who has become a legit Hesiman candidate this season.

In his two seasons as a starter, Lynch has posted a record of 24-2, with losses to only Iowa in last year’s season opener and Florida State in the Orange Bowl. Lynch never lost a conference game.

With the MAC Championship game against Bowling Green coming up, the senior class has a chance to win the MAC for the third consecutive season.

With a victory, the Huskies would be on the brink of crashing the BCS party for a second consecutive year. They would likely land a spot in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and join the likes of TCU as the only other non-AQ school to play in two consecutive BCS Bowl games.

Despite all the success the Huskies seniors have had to this point, with another MAC Championship and BCS Bowl game, they can leave behind a legacy that no one will soon forget.
