One thing football proved in its 30-27 victory over Iowa on Saturday is it is one very confident group.

Facing a 10-point deficit against the Hawkeyes at Kinnick Stadium with five minutes remaining, “confident” is one thing a lot of teams would not be.

This Huskies group is a strong, resilient bunch and showed why they have such a strong belief that at the end of every game they will be the last team standing.

“This team is so close that, they’ve got the ball with, what was it, a minute and a half left?” said senior punter Tyler Wedel in a news conference. “I mean, no one on our sideline is sitting there with their heads down, no one is thinking, ‘We’re gonna lose this football game.’ I think this team just has so much confidence in everyone’s ability that we’re gonna come out and make plays and in the end win football games.”

Senior quarterback Jordan Lynch showed the Huskies can never be counted out of a game no matter the situation. With their backs against the wall, down 10 with minutes left to play, Lynch led the Huskies on their most crucial drive of the game and threw a 40-yard game-tying touchdown to senior Da’Ron Brown.

“One of the things we never do; we never flinch,” said Lynch in a news conference. “You know, we always believe in the process of the journey, and we know when it comes to the fourth quarter we have a chance. That’s when we play. That’s when we start to shine and we live for those opportunities.”

From there, it still seemed as if the Hawkeyes would come out victorious as they lined up for what they hoped would be a game-winning drive in good field position with 1:24 remaining.

Senior safety Jimmie Ward again showed the Huskies will to keep fighting as he picked off Jake Rudock’s first pass attempt of the drive to set up senior kicker Mathew Sims game-winning field goal.

“Our guy’s just believe,” said coach Rod Carey. “And they have a belief that if it gets in that situation, we’re gonna make the plays, and we did today, and that belief saw us through some tough times.”
