Hotel project behind schedule

The new Hampton Inn and Suites will not be finished in time for the Illinois High School Association football championships in November.

The association will host its championship games at Huskie Stadium Nov. 29 and 30. The Hampton Inn and Suites being built on Annie Glidden Road is slated to be finished in January. The original proposal made to the DeKalb County Planning and Zoning committee had a completion date of summer 2013.

“They had made a pretty ambitious proposal to begin with,” said Roger Hopkins, DeKalb economic development consultant.

Al Hill, developer and part owner at the hotel, said part of the delay had to do with a problem Hilton Hotels had with codes and licensing for many of its hotels last year.

Hill said re-applying for a license with Hilton set the project back three or four months but wouldn’t say what was the problem.

Hopkins said the city would still be ready for the IHSA championships even without the new hotel. He said the IHSA chose DeKalb and NIU for its location before the hotel had even been proposed.

Union members have been picketing the construction site of the new hotel since January.

“They’re just doing their job, I’m just doing mine,” said Todd Bradley, general contractor at the Hampton construction site. “We have to build this thing on a budget.”
