‘Deadly Premonition’ is a cult classic

By David Stenger

Who said cult classics only had to be movies?

“Deadly Premonition” is a psychological horror game that also has an open-world aspect.

The director’s cut was released Tuesday as an exclusive on the PS3. It’s a strange game with aspects that are off the wall and just plain weird; however, it became a cult type status among gamers for its supernatural elements and comedy that happens through the game.

The game follows the story of FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan. He is sent to a small town in the country after a gruesome murder that is connected to a series of deaths across the nation. York, his nickname, goes in with best friend, who is the player. York will constantly talk to the player, who he calls Zach. York also befriends several citizens through the town as he tries to find the answer to mystery of what is happening in the town.

In the game, Zach investigates the murder and narrows down suspects. In order to advance the main plot and side quests, you have to make sure Zach arrives to certain areas at a certain time of day, otherwise you have to wait until the next day.

Combat takes place when York enters an area that seems to have been taken over by darkness. Possessed demon-like people attack Zach and you have to fend off the demons with either guns or melee weapons. Gameplay in the original was an enormous bug, as driving and combat situations were frustrating to the point of several gameovers.

Despite the bugs, the game has not changed. The plot is relatively the same with new scenes and side quests added.

“Deadly Premonition” is a game you play more so for the experience of playing the game, and it ranges from gruesome to cheesy. If the game doesn’t suit your tastes, it’s not even worth looking at it; however, if you love genres mixes and cult classics, I highly recommend “Deadly Premonition.”
