‘Nimble Quest’ puts modern spin on a cellphone classic

NimbleBit, a gaming company and developer, has been very successful at creating many entertaining mobile games for both the iOS and Android.

NimbleBit has produced titles like “Tiny Tower,” “Pocket Frogs” and “Pocket Planes.”

The latest game that the company has come out with, “Nimble Quest,” is one of the most fun mobile games I have ever played.

“Nimble Quest” is a game inspired by the old Nokia phone game “Snake.”

Andrew Hayward from Maclife.com describes it as, “… a mash-up of Snake and retro role-playing games that’s uniquely enjoyable and ideal for one-handed amusement.”

Instead of a snake, you are a knight, mage or archer in “Nimble Quest.” Instead of snake food, you must pick up other heroes while fighting all kinds of different enemies to make your chain grow longer.

Eli Cymet from GameZebo.com said, “Your heroes attack automatically as you swipe directionally to guide them through each micro stage, and enemies drop gems, power-ups and more heroes to add to your conga line.”

As the game progresses, the line of characters becomes longer and more diverse. You can unlock different heroes to use or add to the chain, like orcs, faeries and ninjas. The gems you collect can be used to empower you and your line with speed, health or attack damage.

The game has a currency of tokens, which can be used for many things. The tokens can buy you perks like a buff for your line before each round, unlockable characters or the opportunity to restart a level you failed.

It can be a pain to completely start over, which is why using all your tokens to restart a level can be unbelievably tempting. If your tokens are starting to dwindle, you have the option to purchase more tokens with real money. Thankfully, enemies occasionally drop tokens after being taken out.

According to Pete Davison from InsideSocialGames.com, “…the game is completely satisfying without spending a cent, and at no point does it feel like artificial difficulty walls are being put up to force the player into making an in-app purchase.”

I agree with Davison’s statement completely. I may be interested in spending a few dollars to advance further, but then the game would be less challenging to play.

If you need a break from other addictive games for your phone like “Angry Birds,” “Temple Run” or “Candy Crush Saga,” then “Nimble Quest” is the best substitute. It’s got nostalgia combined with a modern love of roleplaying games. Remember to keep your phone charged because with as much fun as “Nimble Quest” is it’s easy to lose track of time.
