‘League of Legends’ tips for the casual gamer

By Patrick Pastrana

Today, I would like to share with you some tips on how to be good at the massively multiplayer online game, League of Legends.

League of Legends (LoL or League for short) is a very complex game. It seems it is becoming more popular every day. Anyone who wants to start playing it should take a few pointers before heading into battle.

I’ll start off with some basic tips. Before you start the game, learn what kind of character works for the lane or position you will be fighting in. If you’re going to bottom lane and want to be an “Attack Damage Carry,” pick someone like Ashe or Ezreal. If you’re going to top lane, pick someone like Singed, Olaf or Garen.

After finding your starting character, know the build order of the items. When I started out playing League, I made sure my friends told me what to buy and when to buy. Another good source for knowing what to buy and how to build your character is MobaFire.com. If you’re playing as Singed, make sure to get “tanky” items to ensure you can take a lot of hits and last longer in battle. Try to build your items to counter your opponents.

This next tip is a very important one: Be nice to your teammates. You need to act like a team player. You can’t just expect they’ll help you out if you’re being annoyingly negative toward them. Rather than placing blame, the correct thing to do is tell them what you would like to happen. Also, if you have a negative attitude, you may be reported, which could lead to getting banned for a couple days.

Something people don’t realize is that this game relies on teamwork. You should never charge in alone unless you are completely fed, meaning you have a lot of kills and you’re a much higher level than your opponents. Don’t go in if you’re probably going to get killed; that’s known as “feeding.”

In the situation of almost killing your enemy who runs under turret, and you have the slightest doubt about surviving, do not chase your target! If you chase your enemies, another one might be hiding around the corner waiting to gank you or flank you from the side with no warning. Most of the time, retreating is the best option. Another great tip is to “bob and weave” your character. Never stand still. That makes it easier for the enemies to aim at you.

I’ve come up with some tips that you should use when you’re done being considered a noob. First off, my theory is to never play AI/bot matches; these are matches that you’re playing against the computer. You need to be accustomed to playing actual people, considering how much smarter people are than the AI. For creep or minion kills, getting 90 to 100 every 10 minutes is ideal for your build and your team. Outside of the League matches, you can buy runes to help you when you’re inside a match. Don’t buy runes until you reach level 20. Level 20 is when you can buy tier three runes.

My last piece of advice is to make sure you can play well with at least five or six characters and with different lanes and positions. You need to be diverse in League because you can’t keep playing the game in the same spot with the same character every match.

Hopefully, all these tips help you battle your way to victory. If someone gave me all this advice when I started out, I would be a much better player than I am now. Happy LoLing, Leaguing and gaming.
