Women’s basketball looks to get its first MAC win of the season against the Eastern Michigan Eagles in Ypsilanti, Mich., tonight.

The Huskies (5-14, 0-6 MAC) are just 1-8 on the road but face an Eastern Michigan team that is 1-8 at home. The Eagles (4-15, 2-4 MAC) have lost four of their last five games, managing a victory over a struggling Kent State team. In their four losses, the Eagles were outscored by an average of 19.5 points per game.

Throughout the season the Huskies have had some of their best overall games against the MAC’s elite teams. Sophomore point guard Amanda Corral knows that the Huskies need to bring the same intensity against Eastern Michigan if they are to get that first MAC win.

“We expect to win,” Corral said. “It’s a game on the road and Eastern Michigan has been struggling there, so we can be even keel if we play down to them. If we play like we did against Toledo, I think we can come away with the win.”

The Huskies’ defense held Toledo (17-2, 5-1 MAC) to 44 points in Sunday’s loss, the Rockets’ lowest point total of the season. The defense has kept them in games, but the offense has been the Achilles’ heel of the team so far.

The Eagles have lost two of their best offensive players this season. Junior forward Olivia Fouty averaged 10.7 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game before going down with a season ending knee injury. Senior guard Miranda Tate was the Eagles’ leading scorer but, according to the team’s website, was released from the team for an undisclosed team violation. Tate averaged 12.9 points per game and shot 84 percent from the free throw line.

Now the Eagles rely on the scoring of junior guard/forward Natachia Watkins. Watkins averages 10.2 points per game and also contributes 5.3 rebounds per game.

Corral focused on what it is the offense has to do in order to keep the Huskies rolling for the entire 40 minutes.

“Executing and setting up screens,” Corral said. “They will see it coming and will probably switch, so we have to come off of them well to score.”

Eastern Michigan averages 55 points per game on 36.4 percent shooting and has shot only 27 percent from behind the 3-point line, the Eagles also turn the ball over 16.7 times per game.
