Apps make exercising easier
January 22, 2013
Need help getting motivated to do some push-ups, burn calories or choose music for an intense workout?
Don’t sweat it. There’s an app for that.
Technology has revolutionized our world in so many ways, including the way we get in shape, so it’s only fair that I review some of the best fitness apps on the market.
I hate cliches and things that have already been done before–if it doesn’t stand out, I’m not going to use it and it’s just going to be wasted space on my phone.
I need something that’s going to get me motivated in a fun and unique way, and these apps have proven that they can do just that.
Zombies, Run!
This mobile app may change the way you view running.
It doesn’t just track what you do like any old fitness app; it puts you in an apocalyptic world as a character named Runner 5, and you have to run for your life from zombies. It allows players to customize their playlists and running experience.
“Running didn’t come naturally to me when I was in my 20s, and I had to use all sorts of gadgets and apps to motivate me to do it,” Adrian Hon, CEO of Six to Start and developer of the app, said in an email. “One of the things I was surprised about was the fact that there weren’t any running ‘games’ that made the act of running more fun, so I’d always wanted to do something about that.”
It’s definitely unique and a sure way to get motivated and fit. The Zombies, Run! App is available for $3.99 for iPhone and Android phones.
Songza
Although this app isn’t exactly a fitness app, it does offer a lot of music options. Who doesn’t like good tunes for an intense workout?
It’s one of the few music apps that has no advertisements and it’s free. Songza is unique; it can play music for any situation, and it can change the type of music depending on the day. You can choose playlists based on genre, activity, mood or decade, and it automatically creates the perfect playlist for that time.
My favorite playlist for fitness tunes is Indie Yoga because it’s really mellow and relaxing, but if you’re looking for something more upbeat, Songza offers playlists like Hard Rock, Hard Bod and Drop-a-beat Workout.
Songza is also available for free for both iPhone and Android phones.
Calorie Counter and Diet Tracker by MyFitnessPal
I have never been a fan of counting calories, but this app makes it so easy that you have to love doing it.
Having a list of foods that you’ve eaten with the total number of calories helps you make better decisions about what to eat.
According to MyFitnessPal.com, keeping a food diary can double your weight loss. This app makes it portable and simple to track everything you’ve eaten for the day and all the calories you burned from exercising.
The Calorie Counter and Diet Tracker can be downloaded for free on iPhone and Android phones.
