Goodwill, NIU team up for donation drive

NIU and Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois have teamed up to hold a donation drive that will run until 15.

Donations of clothing, linens, computers and computer accessories, shoes and cell phones, among other things, can be dropped off in the blue bins located in the lobbies of Stevenson South and Stevenson North residence halls, or at Goodwill, 1037 S. Annie Glidden Road. The drive is aimed at the students in particular because they will be leaving the residence halls for break or after graduation, said Melissa Burlingame, program coordinator of the Institute for the Study of the Environment, Sustainability, & Energy at NIU.

“Similar donation drives at other universities have had tremendous success in the residence halls,” Burlingame said.

This is the first donation drive Goodwill has hosted this year at NIU, but it won’t be the last, said Shannon Halverson, the PR/marketing manager for Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois.

“We are going to hold this event again in the spring in all residence halls, in addition to Stevenson, during student move-out day,” Halverson said. “So many students throw away unwanted items that can be recycled and reused by others. We hope to have the ‘Goodwill, Not Landfill!’ donation drive every spring.”
