April 25, 2012
The following was taken directly from area police and fire department records, or from DeKalb County court records. Anyone mentioned is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Tuesday
At 5:40 p.m., DeKalb police were dispatched to the Union Pacific Railroad in reference to an individual spray painting the wall of the bridge near Hickory Street. Upon arrival, police observed two suspects on the northwest side of the bridge. A train was passing so police motioned to the suspects to meet them on the bridge once the train passed. After the train passed he suspects were identified as Ben R. Jones, 26, of DeKalb and Nathan H. Myers, 28, of DeKalb. Police found a nap sack and another black sack on the ground in the vicinity. Both Jones and Myers denied possession of the sack on the ground. Inside the sack was scrap metal from the railroad. Myers has scavenged for metals in the past. Police found evidence of rust on the suspects hands from picking up metal. Both Jones and Myers were arrested for trespassing on railroad property, taken to the DeKalb Police Department and released on IBond. The Union Pacific Police were notified of the incident and are investigating the graffiti.
