The Rant: Phil Emery is working football magic

By Jimmy Johnson

We’re just one day away from the NFL Draft, and I can’t wait to see who new Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery is zeroed in on with the No. 19 pick.

Prior to joining the Bears this offseason, Emery was the college scouting Director for the Kansas City Chiefs. Being considered a talent evaluator of college prospects, some pondered if Emery would come up cold in free agency.

Instead, Emery has been spitting hot fire with his first-year acquisition. Offensively, he’s added a few new toys for Jay Cutler and company in wide receiver Brandon Marshall, running back Michael Bush, a backup quarterback in Jason Campbell, and some beef upfront in guard Chilo Rachal,

Emery’s replenished Chicago’s special teams with several aces: Blake Costanzo, Devin Thomas and Eric Weems.

And defensively, Emery landed cornerback Kelvin Hayden and finally some depth at linebacker with former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Geno Hayes.

Since the Bears’s offseason has primarily focused on offense, I’d expect to hear a defensive player’s named called Thursday night.

Emery said Chicago is targeting seven players, and while he didn’t give any names, I think it’s safe to say we can all trust him.
