Sebenste: Spring break temperatures will not last forever
March 19, 2012
The weather the DeKalb area enjoyed over spring break will not last forever, said NIU Staff Meteorologist Gilbert Sebenste.
During spring break, DeKalb received soaring temperatures, reaching highs in the 70s and 80s. Sebenste said on average, DeKalb faces highs only in the 40s in March.
“Last week, we broke four record highs from Thursday until yesterday [Sunday] by half degrees,” Sebenste said. “At the rate we’re going, this is easily the warmest Marches ever.”
Sebenste’s forecast for this week includes passing clouds and systems, bringing DeKalb partly cloudy skies Tuesday and cloudier skies Wednesday.
“It’ll be a great first half of the week,” Sebenste said. “There’s a system coming for Thursday through Saturday that will bring showers and thunderstorms, cooling into the 60s. Needless to say, we’ll be well above normal temperatures even if we drop into the 60s, which we should.”
Sebenste also said temperatures this week should beat or reach record temperatures before the weather cools down on Thursday. He also said although DeKalb has seen 70 degree highs for six days in a row, this is the earliest in the month these highs have been reached.
Sebenste still warns about winter weather’s possible return, however.
“Normally in April, we see a little over an inch of snow,” he said. “We have had four inches of snow in April. So, by no means should we consider winter to be over. This nice weather will not last forever.”
Despite this warning, Sebenste said DeKalb should not see any surprise snow for the rest of March. After a cool weekend, DeKalb temperatures will be pushed back up into the 70s for the first half of next week.
