Toler dismissed from NIU basketball team

Tim Toler is no longer a member of the NIU basketball team.

Toler’s career as a Huskie came to a halt Thursday, when the senior power forward tweeted, “Well my days as an NIU Huskie have came to an abrupt end…should be an interesting next couple days!”

In a response to the tweet from Toler, NIU media relations released a statement from NIU coach Mark Montgomery Thursday which confirmed that Toler had indeed been dismissed from the team.

“Tim Toler has been dismissed from the Huskie basketball program, effective today,” Montgomery said. “Tim will remain in school and continue to work toward graduation, which is the most important thing for him at this time.”

Toler had been suspended from the squad since NIU’s loss to Ball State Jan. 21, when it was announced that Toler was in violation of team rules.

According to various news sources, Toler was a question mark to play heading into the Kent State game, which NIU lost, 90-54.

Montgomery did not detail what rules had been broken that warranted the suspension or the dismissal.

Last year, Toler averaged 9.9 points per game and five rebounds per game on a team that finished 9-21 under former coach Ricardo Patton.

Shortly after Montgomery was hired, he put Toler on a conditioning program to get Toler back into shape.

Toler lost 40 pounds heading into this season, which helped him look quicker and fresher out on the floor. The forward averaged 10.8 points per game and four rebounds per game before his career ended Thursday.
