Dorms offer summer living accommodations for students

DeKALB | Erin Holman works in DeKalb over the summer, leading high school students across campus as a mentor for the Upper Bound program. Her commute to work is short; she also lives on campus.

Holman, senior family studies major, is one of about 140 students who live in Stevenson Towers for the summer semester.

Senior education major Drew Herrmann is an orientation coordinator this summer and last summer was a CA. He lives in the DeKalb area but prefers to stay on campus because of the social aspect.

“I think over the summer you’re closer to people [than] over the year.” Herrmann said. “I think there are more opportunities to hang out with people and things like that.”

Some students have already chosen to live off-campus in the fall, but find the residence hall a good fit for the three month interim.

Junior business major Jessica Johnson works at the financial aid office. She has a lease for an apartment but cannot move in until August.

“I decided to stay in the dorm because it was easier to move my things,” Johnson said. “I lived here all year…so it wasn’t too much of an adjustment that I had to make.”

All freshman athletes must stay in Stevenson for the summer to train.

Amanda Corral, freshman liberal arts undeclared major, is on the women’s basketball team.

“It’s a positive that you can meet everyone.” Corral said.

David LaBanc, director of Facililties and Operations in Housing and Dining, said the office tries to help students make the best housing choice for their situation.

“We are happy when they choose to stay with us in the halls,” he said.
