Police investigate gunshots

Police are investigating two individual reports of shots being fired over the weekend in downtown DeKalb and in the neighborhood of Ridge and Rushmoore drives.

DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler said no one was injured in either case. Spangler said both cases are under investigation but no one is currently in custody and he could not comment on suspects.

The first incident occurred around 1:49 a.m. Saturday in the area of Third Street and Lincoln Highway. Spangler said a crowd was present outside The House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, after an event. A single gunshot was reported.

A second incident was reported to have occurred around 9 p.m. Sunday in the area of Ridge and Rushmoore drives. Spangler said two to three shots were fired with at least two striking an apartment building in the 1200 block of Rushmoore Drive.

Police do not think the building was the intended target.

“The apartment building was occupied but no one was injured,” Spangler said. “[Police] think the shooter was shooting at people standing outside of the apartments.”

Police are investigating the cases individually but are not ruling out any connection between the two cases. Spangler said there is no evidence to suggest the two cases are related.
