Gymnasts score over 192 for second straight week

NIU gymnastics recorded their fourth straight loss on Friday at Ball State, 193.400-192.025.

The Huskies (1-7 overall, 1-5 MAC) scored above 192 points for the second straight meet, but failed to post a new team-high overall score.

While NIU was unable to post a victory in any individual event, its highest score on the meet came on floor exercise.

NIU scored 48.300 on the floor, .300 higher than its previous high score.

One reason for the increased score on the floor was the return of junior Tanya Rachan.

Rachan hadn’t competed on floor exercise since she went down early in the season and has been limited since.

In her return, the Lowell, Ind. native scored a 9.725 to lead the Huskies. The score was also good enough to tie for third in the event.

Other top performances from the Huskies included senior Holly Reichard, who took first place on balance beam with a 9.725. Reichard also tied for first place in the uneven parallel bars with the same score.

Junior Shonda Clore scored 9.650 to lead the Huskies in the vault competition, and sophomore Marisa Liptak recorded a career-high 9.650 on balance beam.

Despite their recent improvements, the team and head coach Mark Sontag were not satisfied with their performance in their meet on Friday.

“We are never going to be satisfied,” Sontag said. “We know that we can always perform better. We competed well today, and there were a lot of bright spots for us, but we just had a couple too many mistakes. But we will fix these mistakes, and we will be ready for our next meet on Tuesday.”
