NIU students pick their top ‘man movies’

By Lilli Mauser

When I was 8 years

old, my dad bought me my first goldfish and told me that we were

going to watch one of the greatest movies of all time.

That movie was

The

Terminator.”

From Arnold’s very

first “I’ll be back,” I knew that my world had been unequivocally

changed forever.

Most men seem to

have their solid “top five” films of all time, which (usually)

rotate around the same 20 action movies (with a few wild cards

mixed in). They not only love these films, but will debate for

hours over which ones are truly the best.

These guys choose

their top favortie guy movies:

Grant

Bramer, senior history education major

<a href=

“_blank”>Gladiator: The plot is great, a father

seeking vengeance for his murdered wife and son, while also seeking

to avenge a slain father figure. Plus, it’s gladiators. you can’t

get more masculine than that.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0112573/” target=

“_blank”>Braveheart: The plot and action are great in

this movie, but in all respects I’m a softy for the love story Mel

Gibson’s character William Wallace has with his wife. You really

cheer for him as he is fighting to bring her killers to justice as

well as lead his people to “FREEDOM!”

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107290/” target=”_blank”>Jurassic

Park: Still a huge kid at heart. I loved this movie

growing up even had t-rex and velociraptor blankets.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0378109/” target=”_blank”>Into the

Blue: I’m a avid swimmer so I love this movie. The

ocean is as much of a character as the actors themselves. Treasure

hunting, danger, drug smugglers, and Jessica Alba in a bikini;

enough said.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0357413/” target=

“_blank”>Anchorman: This movie I love just for the one

liners. Plus, it took place in my home town of San

Diego.

Aaron

Goodof, junior business administration major

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0137523/” target=”_blank”>Fight

Club: One of my top five favorite movies because it

has everything people like in movies combined into one – comedy,

amazing action scenes, and a killer twist at the end.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0418279/” target=

“_blank”>Transformers: The idea of alien robots coming

to Earth and “duking” it out, to me, is pretty cool.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0838283/” target=”_blank”>Step

Brothers: A movie that needs no further explanation of

why it is one of my top five movies. Probably the funniest movie I

have seen in a very long time. Almost everybody I know uses a

phrase from that movie at least two times a day and it never gets

old.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258463/” target=”_blank”>The Bourne

Trilogy: Definitely one of my favorites as well,

because Matt Damon is a bad-ass, kind of like me.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110357/” target=”_blank”>The Lion

King: A classic among classics. This was the first

movie, besides Winnie the Pooh, that I can remember watching as a

kid, and for the past 21 years or so it has remained one of my

all-time favorites.

 Alex

Grubb, sophomore English major

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0468569/” target=”_blank”>The Dark

Knight: Batman is my favorite superhero and

Christopher Nolan is a fantastic director, so the two together is

pure gold. Heath Ledger was also amazing as the Joker.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338526/” target=”_blank”>Van

Helsing: Hugh Jackman is one of my favorite actors and

I’ve always loved classic monster tales, so again, a great

combination. And who can argue with Kate Beckinsale in tight

leather?

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/” target=”_blank”>Star

Wars: What’s not to love about Star Wars? Sci-fi

action and Princess Leia rocking that slave outfit! The special

effects were way beyond their time when the first Star Wars came

out, and George Lucas is a genius. When I was a kid, I always

dreamed of being a Jedi Knight some day.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0822854/” target=

“_blank”>Shooter: Mark Wahlberg is my absolute

favorite actor of all times, and this is just a very clever movie

that keeps you on the edge of your seat all the way up to the

credits.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120903/” target=

“_blank”>X-Men: Again, Hugh Jackman is great, and the

all around cast that was chosen for the movie adaption of one of my

favorite childhood comic books/cartoons was great too. The special

effects were killer, too!

Kyle

Monahan, junior psychology major

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108002/” target=

“_blank”>Rudy: It’s a story about the little guy with

little talent persevering and reaching his goal because of his

heart and passion.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0187078/” target=”_blank”>Gone in

Sixty Seconds: I love the story and the action

involved.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0251160/” target=”_blank”>John

Q: Drama and action mixed together.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/” target=”_blank”>Star

Wars: in-depth story with a lot of action.

<a href=

“http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071562/” target=”_blank”>The

Godfather 1 and 2: the story and acting is amazing and

its said to be one of the greatest movies ever made.”

While these

opinions will probably spark debate in the minds of  many men, I’d

advise the ladies to actually watch these films because most of

them truly are great (and much more exciting then the typical

“chick flick”).
