Huskies top SIU-E and Green Bay

After dropping back-to-back 1-0 decisions in the previous two weekends, the NIU women’s soccer team managed to turn the tables this weekend.

The Huskies kicked off the weekend when they played host to SIU-Edwardsville on Friday afternoon.

The team got back on the winning track with a 1-0 triumph over the previously undefeated Cougars (5-1-1).

After a scoreless first half, sophomore Shelbi Johnson scored the game’s only goal in the 66th minute when she slipped a shot past SIUE goalkeeper Claire Lovercheck. NIU held on to the lead for its third win of the season.

Sunday, the Huskies were back on the pitch for senior day, hosting Green Bay.

NIU (4-3-0) once again shut down the opposition’s offense as the Huskies took down the Phoenix 1-0.

The win came on the strength of a second half goal from Frances Boukidis in the 54th minute.

While Green Bay [2-4-2] head coach Trevor Warren liked the way his team played, he is growing weary of dropping close games.

“It’s frustrating to lose another 1-0 game,” Warren said. “That’s kind of been the story of our season so far. We’ve been playing pretty well and have been playing hard but just haven’t had a lot of luck. Today was the same thing, another good effort by our girls though.”

NIU senior Kylie Revelle enjoyed the win and the improved offense, but the experience of senior day ranked just a bit higher.

“I like the improved offense, and I’m glad we were able to get a win,” Revelle said. “But what was really great was being able get a win on senior day.”

NIU head coach Carrie Barker echoed the sentiment after the game on Sunday, expressing her commitment to the seniors.

“We would really like to dedicate the rest of the season to the seniors,” Barker said. “This was our last non-conference game, and going into our conference schedule we’re going to go at it hard for the seniors.”

The team will travel to Toledo on Friday to take on the Rockets.
