Homecoming registration deadline looms

Students interested in participating in Homecoming events are running out of time.

Application packets for participation in Homecoming events are due Friday by 4:30 p.m. Homecoming events begin on Sunday, Oct. 10 and run through Sunday, Oct. 16.

LaTasha Bennett, vice president of administration for the Campus Activities Board, said response has been “minimum” and that she wants to see students get involved this year.

“Homecoming is one of those major events on campus,” Bennett said. “We want to do as much as possible to keep the tradition alive.”

Applications are required to participate in Homecoming court elections, the powder puff football game, the recycled boat race and Yell Like Hell. All events are free except for Homecoming elections, which cost $15 per candidate.

CAB will host events which don’t require applications as well. A comedy show will be held on Oct. 12 in the Carl Sandburg Auditorium and a step competition is planned for Saturday, Oct. 16, said CAB President Byron Neal.

The Homecoming Parade on Oct. 16 will also be open to all. Bennett stressed her desire to see a strong turnout at the event, which is a tradition that she said has been poorly attended for “about 10 years.”

“It hasn’t been doing so well,” Bennett said.

Currently, there are four candidates for Homecoming court. Bennett said CAB needed 11 for a full court. Candidates will be posted by Monday, Bennet said, and elections will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at DuSable Hall and the Holmes Student Center.
