Must-sees of the DeKalb music scene

By Connor Rice

In a city with a vibrant, 21-and-over nightlife, seeing bands and entertainment outside of bars can be a difficult thing to do if you’re not shelling out serious coin. Thankfully, in a college town like DeKalb, there are plenty all-ages venues out there to catch great local and national entertainment on a Friday night. Here is a sampling of where you might be able to find a show if you’re a minor attendee.

The House Café (263 E. Lincoln Highway)

Having hosted the likes of alt-comedian Neil Hamburger and anyone from the folk group The Giving Tree Band to hardcore punk legends Bane, The House Café is a mainstay in DeKalb shows. The events are affairs for any age to attend, and if you’re over 21, a selection of mostly independent and craft beer is available.

The Egyptian Theatre (135 N. 2nd St.)

Completed in 1929, this historic DeKalb landmark is the place to be to locate the city’s film festivals and limited showings of classic movies. But with screen comes stage, where “shadow cast” performances of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” as well as various touring comedy and musical acts round out the Egyptian-themed location’s calendar.

Smalltown Skateshop (229 E. Lincoln Highway)

It is not unlikely that this downtown storefront might be your occasional source for hometown hip-hop. The shop is not primarily a venue, but has been known to host local performers, and will be a featured spot during this fall’s Middlewest Fest.
