NIU Recreation Services holding meeting today regarding outdoor activities

Spring has nearly arrived, as students walk around campus in shorts and sandals for the first time in months.

To welcome the warm weather, the Recreation Services outdoor program is hosting a meeting today at 9 p.m. in Room 128 of the Chick Evans Field House for students who are looking for new outdoor experiences.

The Outing Centre offers rock climbing, spelunking, kayaking and many other activities for beginners or experienced participants.

“It helps to get you away from your studies for awhile,” said Assistant Director Daniel Swan. “We try to provide an educational opportunity while making it fun.”

Most of the fees for the trips are covered in tuition, leaving students to pay an average of $30 for a day trip.

“Outdoors adventures are rewarding, because they are challenges between you and yourself,” Swan said.

Swan is encouraging anyone who is interested in participating in one of the Outing Centre’s trips to attend the meeting.

Elsewhere across campus, students have been taking advantage of the warm spring weather.

Tuesday, the grassy area between Stevenson and Grant Towers was bustling with people playing frisbee and football.

“I just like to get outside and play football or catch,” said Katie Morin, a junior health education major.

Physical education classes, such as KNPE109, are able to take advantage of the warm weather for the first time this semester. Students of KNPE109, a jogging class, have spent the first half of the semester at the Campus Recreation Center running on treadmills or around the track.

“I would much rather be outside,” said senior statistics major Mike Bilodeau. “It’s definitely a lot more pleasant than running on a treadmill.”
