SA allocates $25,000 to CAB for funding

In a decisive Student Association meeting on Sunday night, the SA Senate passed a supplemental bill for the Campus Activity Board (CAB).

Despite the CAB supplemental bill of $25,000 that was brought to the senate’s agenda, the meeting housed a low turnout of senators in which 25 out of 39 senators were present. To hold an SA meeting, a quorum of 20 senators is necessary. No executive officers were present at the meeting.

“I was pretty pleased with the meeting, but the only thing I was unhappy with was the attendance,” said Speaker of the Senate Matthew Venaas. “This is definitely one of the worst meetings we’ve done with attendance all year.”

The SA holds $80,000 to distribute in supplemental funding throughout the year upon request. CAB requested that the SA give it $25,000 of that supplemental funding.

This is due to CAB’s budget cut of $90,000 and the recent SA legislation that does not allow campus organizations to keep their rollover funds. For CAB, these funds would have amounted to $110,000 had they been able to keep it.

The bill was passed 24 to 1 after much deliberation, and even with the consideration of postponing the bill to next week’s meeting.

“The problem that was arising was that the money was just not there to do these programs which was going to cause us to cut these programs and we didn’t really want to,” said CAB President Marlon Haywood. “We were at a point where we were maybe running into a deficit, so we had to come to the senate to ask for help.”

CAB Vice President Emeka Chike-Obi said CAB was allocated about $228,000 for the school year and about $112,000 of that money has been spent.

The next item addressed was the senate confirmation for the appointment of Aaron Funfsinn as the first SA Supreme Court justice in what has been an empty supreme court. The senate’s decision was unanimous.

“I think the senate took a step in the right direction as far as confirming a new court,” Funfsinn said. “It’s good now that we’re going to have, hopefully, a court that will last the duration of the careers of the justices in college.”

Along with the bill and the appointment confirmation, three student organizations were officially approved by the SA. These student organizations were the Keep A Child Alive, NIU Students For Life and the NIU Student Investment organizations.

Two SA meetings remain this semester on Nov. 16 and 23.
