Latest viral video has important message

By NYSSA BULKES

Reverse psychology rears its weird head once again.

In the latest YouTube viral video spout for declareyourself.com, accredited actors urge people NOT to vote.

No, that wasn’t a typo.

Famous people like Leonardo DiCaprio, Forest Whitaker, Dustin Hoffman, Laura Linney and many others start by saying that unless voters care about issues like Darfur, the toilet-residing economy and women’s and civil rights, you shouldn’t vote.

Or should they?

Of course people should, they later backtrack. Without voters taking responsibility for their country, none of these issues will change, they proclaim.

They’re right, and it’s sad famous faces were needed to get the message out. To date, this is the election that matters the most. Endless issues plague America, and without someone in office to bring about change and put forth new legislation, everything will stay like it is.

Things will get worse, and the people who moan and complain that the world sucks will become the biggest hypocrites in the world.

Maybe sarcasm will work. Maybe people need someone to prod them and poke them to get off their couches and make a difference. The video, without a doubt, is clever. It takes the politically apathetic mindset and kicks it in the face for five minutes straight.

There have been countless videos and public service announcements making sure voters get their daily reminder to vote. As someone who has already registered, the ads are getting irritating.

For those who haven’t, however, and for those who plan on sitting on their couches on Election Day and making plans for takeout rather than for getting to their polling place, the ads need to keep coming.

It’s not news that voting is crucial to the democratic system on which this country relies. The current administration tells mainstream media daily that the reason there are troops in the Middle East is that democracy needs to be protected.

So for those who support the troops, there shouldn’t be any doubt whether voting is an option. For those who encourage America’s presence overseas, voting should be like paying rent: non-negotiable.

While the videos may seem annoying, they’re prodding Americans for a reason. People die for democracy every day. For some, democracy is something they just read about in newspapers they have to access illegally.

To others, democracy is something they can’t even talk about in their own homes.

So this ad has a point. Vote. Just do it. It’s not even a question.
