Men’s basketball Darion Anderson makes pre-season All-MAC

An NIU basketball player has earned preseason honors this year.

Sophomore Darion “Jake” Anderson was one of 10 players named to the preseason All-Mid American Conference Team Wednesday.

Last year’s MAC Freshman of the Year averaged a team-best 12.2 points and 2.6 assists per game last season.

Future Hall of Famers

The 1972 NIU baseball team will be inducted into the NIU Athletics Hall of Fame Friday.

The ’72 Huskies finished with a 24-8 record that season, en route to capturing the Midwestern Conference title as well as upsetting defending NCAA Regional Champion and 1971 College World

Series runner-up Southern Illinois.

NIU ranked third in the nation in team batting with a .318 average. The Huskies also ranked in the top 20 with a .961 fielding percentage.

However, NIU’s magical season came to an end at Bowling Green, where the Huskies dropped a 2-0 game to host BGSU, and an 8-1 decision to the University of Iowa in the NCAA Regional.

Women’s Tennis

NIU Women’s Tennis wrapped up play in the 2008 Fall MAC Invitational hosted by Western Michigan Sunday.

The Huskies took five of seven singles’ matches in the final day of competition.

Martina Schnapp, Lilian Asuaje, Sara McLaughlin, Emily Rogers and Noa Umemura each took home victories for NIU.

The Huskies will travel to Lansing, Mich., Oct. 23 to continue play in the ITA Regionals.

Football update

Two Toledo players arrested outside a bar just hours after the Rockets beat Michigan on Saturday will not start this weekend against Northern Illinois.

Wide receiver Nick Moore, who caught 20 passes for 162 yards in the 13-10 victory over the Wolverines, was charged with misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

Police said the senior and team captain was involved in a fight.

Defensive end Albertson Alexandre was charged with obstructing official business, also a misdemeanor.

According to a police report, officers had to use mace to break up a rowdy crowd of about 40 people outside a Toledo bar Saturday night.
