Political figures publishing books bad news

By NYSSA BULKES

If you have a book, you’ve arrived. You know, in the event you didn’t know.

Back when Barack Obama first started his bid for the White House, I remember all of sudden seeing his books on the “Barnes And Noble Bestseller” table at the fronts of their stores. Before, he was just a senator, so his books obviously weren’t that important. If he’s running for president, however, I guess that’s a book review in itself.

Politicians write books all the time, and it makes sense. If you have a following, it makes sense to make some extra pocket change on the side.

The same thing just happened to Joe Biden and John McCain’s daughter, Meghan. Both have books out, and both are now official hotcakes. Because they matter, they’re books must matter too.

I can understand peoples’ interest: They’re involved in the biggest race for public service. They want your vote, and the informed citizen will do nothing short of reading all that is available for consumption on both sides of the issues.

If you’re famous, though, that doesn’t mean you should write a book. McCain has PR people working around the clock for him. It’s tacky when the family needs to get involved in boosting the image that you’re the most raucous daddy in the world.

The same goes for Biden and Obama too. People voted for them because they agreed with their views on the issues, what they said they’d do for their publics, etc. They don’t need to reassure them with book deals. If anything it’s tacky.

So yes. End the tactless bookselling and leave my bookstore afternoons in peace.
