Soulja Boy keeps Convo audience on its feet

By RYAN STRONG

Everyone from frat boys to black NIU students to middle-aged white women “cranked that Soulja Boy” Friday night at the Convocation Center.

The 17-year-old Mississippi native, born DeAndre Ramone Way, gave a surprisingly exceptional performance to an energetic crowd Friday night. The rapper performed his more popular tracks, including “Yahhh!,” “Soulja Girl” and, of course, “Crank That (Soulja Boy).”

Soulja Boy’s jokes in between each song were actually amusing and his undeniably catchy lyrics could make even the most causal rap music listener “crank that” at Friday night’s performance.

Furthermore, the dance moves, which looked awfully difficult, were well-executed during each song. Throughout the entire night, Soulja Boy did a phenomenal job of keeping the audience on its feet and dancing along with him.

The concert was not without its flaws. The young artist spent too much time performing other rapper’s songs. The songs, which I could have easily heard on the radio for free, included Flo Rida’s “Low,” and Hurricane Chris’ “A Bay Bay.” Considering the audience was there to see Soujia Boy, one would think that he would perform his own songs.

At the end of the night, I did not feel as if my IQ had risen by any means, nor was I particularly motivated to do something that was intellectually stimulating, but that is not what Soulja Boy is about.

Soulja Boy was there simply to entertain, and he did that pretty well.
