Democrats meet, watch results in Student Center

Local Democrats gathered in the Holmes Student Center Huskie Den Tuesday night to view the election proceedings.

Mark Pietrowski, a non-credit coordinator for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences External Programming and Journalism 335 instructor, co-hosted the event with Kori Rempfer, a junior art history major. Pietrowski and Rempfer provided pizza and refreshments to an audience that included DeKalb County Democrats, members of the College Democrats and Students for Obama.

Pietrowski said the event was inspired by a similar one hosted in Rockford.

“People told us they didn’t want to travel to Rockford or Chicago,” he said. “[They] wanted something more local so they could meet people.”

The event was funded by Pietrowski and Rempfer and by private donations from DeKalb County Democrats.

Pietrowski said the great majority of the attendees of the event were Obama supporters, but “we have two Hillary supporters. We’re not going to kick them out or anything.”

“We have a range of all ages, kids coloring in coloring books, husbands and wives here and people from the college. It’s good that everyone can get together over such a common interest,” Pietrowski said. “It’s good to get members of the university involved with the local community. It might get students involved in local government as well.”

Local politician Lynn Schmitz, who was elected precinct committee-person for the 34th precinct, was in attendance.

“I voted for me, my husband voted for me, so I think I won. No one else was running,” Schmitz said.

Schmitz said she had previously run for DeKalb County Board unsuccessfully a year and a half ago.

Pietrowski and Rempfer viewed the CNN Super Tuesday coverage and had a computer set up displaying DeKalb County results as they came in.
